Dahlia 'Cactus Hybrids' Cut Flower Seeds
Dahlia 'Cactus Hybrids' have large flowers that are beautiful quilled and twisted petals that add funkyness to arrangements but still look like they could fit into an old Dutch 16th century floral painting.

They come in a mix of colours from white to pink to red & yellow. 'Cactus Hybrids' grow to a height of 1.5m and will require staking, but it blooms for ages from July until the first frosts and lasts well in a vase.

Cut Dahlias in the early morning with sharp scissors just above a leaf junction, and place in hot water immediately. Before placing in vase, cut the stem again underwater at an angle (this helps prevent airlocks), and remove leaves below water line. Replacing water daily & cutting the stems again helps the flowers to last longer.

Approx 40 seeds per pack.

Seed Information
Sow Dates:
Feb-Mar
Site:
Fertile moist, sunny site.
Sow:
Sow seeds into seed trays & cover lightly with compost or vermiculite. Keep under glass at a temperature of 20°C. Germination takes about 7 days. Prick out into pots & grow on at 15°C. When the risk of frost has passed, plant out at a spacing of 30cm x 30cm for cutting garden or just mix in with other garden plants. They do not like dry conditions so mix in plenty of organic manure before planting and top dress with some blood, fish & bone, but don't feed again as may encourage foliage growth rather than flowers.
Care:
Keep well watered but avoid wetting foliage and it is best to water early in the day. Pinch out the central shoot to encourage side shoots to develop when the plant is about 40cm. When there are 6-8 side shoots, pinch out the top pair of buds. Avoid crowding plants and prune to thin them to allow air circulation which helps against botrytis & powdery mildew.
Flower:
July to October (until first frosts). Dahlias should only be cut when fully open as they will not open if cut when in bud.
