Verbena bonariensis AGM Seed |
|
Verbena bonariensis is a perennial flower that adds height and wispiness to the garden and flower arrangements. It is a tall plant that has small delicate, vibrant metallic purple flowers that are held high on 1.5m thin, ridgid but square stems. It adds impact to borders and the vase when used in numbers. It will flower in the first year from an early sowing.
It has been used extensively in prairie style plantings by Tom Stuart-Smith & Piet Oudolf and the flowers are a haven for bees & butterflies.
Approx 300 seeds per pack.

How:
|
Sow the seeds direct on the surface of free-draining, pre-watered seed compost in plug trays to avoid root disturbance. Cover the seed with a layer of vermiculite and refrain from watering again until the seed has germinated. Cover tray and keep at 18-22°C until germination takes place. Germination can be erratic and may take 2 weeks or more.
After 5 weeks 'pot on' to individual small pots and then transplant outside when large enough (60cm apart), after a period of 'hardening off'.

Care:
|
Cut flowers down to ground in autumn and mulch to help through winter. Self-seeds easily so take care if you don't want lots of little ones. To help it get through winter cover with a thick layer of dry mulch in the autumn, and don't cut down the flower stems.
